Kids Cooking

Date:  Jan 26, 2016

Children need to be given duties at home.  Even if you have a domestic helper, you should assign your child something to do or to help with.

Teach them how to make Ice Cream (without using the Ice Cream maker)

IMG 9534

Make their hands dirty.

IMG 9287

Their job can be as simple as taking a scissors and cut the home made macaroni.

IMG 9650

Instead of letting them watch TV or play games by themselves.

Make them do work.

Hey, see what Kay Kay has prepared for the playdate dinner.

IMG 9651 1

This is the great age to assign them to do things.  Even playdates can help out.

IMG 9693

Simple task like decorating the CNY decors.

This is a job for children.  Not a job for domestic helper.

IMG 9698\

Kids will be happy to decorating the house.

They feel a strong sense of ownership of our home.

The make the home looks lively.

IMG 9709

At the end of the day, lazy parents will clap their hands and say Thank You!

IMG 9716

During weekend.  It will be this fellow job to prepare breakfast.

See he just wake up.  His hair still standing.

IMG 9731

Don’t be afraid to make him fry eggs.

IMG 9733

It is the most easy task.  You know after he mastered this skill.  He can cook his lunch next time.  hahahaha

Cook rice, cook egg, put a bit of soya sauce, and that’s it.

Of course, thru out the time, he will learn more dishes.

IMG 9734

This is the Sunny Side Up he make for all of us.

IMG 9735

And then, he will set the table and call all of us to come and eat.

IMG 9738

Although it is simple meal.

But this meal is prepared by my son.

And he is only 10 years old.

IMG 9741

This week.  My Sunday breakfast.  Of course, Cucumber not cut by him.  He still need some time to handle knife.

IMG 9740 1

This was last week one.  With home grown cabbage.

IMG 9502

Three weeks ago.  He tries his first ever scramble egg.

IMG 8279

This is his very first attempt.  Which is 3 weeks ago too.

IMG 8263

Some times ago, he also prepare these.  We prepare and cut the beef for him he just cook with everything in it.  Watch the fire, and that’s it.

He felt so proud.

(The beef curry is a bit hard, I think control of fire not so accurate.  But still edible.  Next day, mommy cook another 1 hour to make the meet soft)

(Stif fry beef is nice)

(Tofu is simple)

IMG 8257

Don’t forget Monkey see Monkey do.

So, the young one also take parts in some activities.

IMG 9794

He make these cookies.  As you can see, not all cookie the same size.

IMG 9799

And yes, sometimes there are injury happen.

Like last week, Jay got oil burnt on his fingers.

But hey, that’s cooking.  So, what is cooking if you don’t burnt your hand some time.  hahahaha

this will only make the kids more careful next time handling cooking.

Jay is No Longer "Severely" Overweigth

Date:  Jan 26, 2016

Jay Jay is no longer “Severely” overweight.

Last 3 years, the report card will mark as “Severely” overweight.

Look at the BMI.  It actually dropped.  Which is good.

And he has been doing Bicycle, swimming, Taekwondo, Golf, Badminton, etc all kinds of sports weekly.

Not to mention the care program in early morning before class.

He is happy.

He is having lots of fun.

And now he is just “overweight”.  Keep up the good work Jay!

2016 Target - Self Learning

Date:  Jan 16, 2016

In school, teacher’s job is to teach the students knowledge.

At home, I think parent’s job is to teach the kid to become independent.

Yeah!  No longer I need to produce the flash card for Jay Jay.

Starting this year, he has to do his own flash cards.

Me and him agreed that flash cards for learning Chinese is useful.

So, this year, we are going to continue using this method not only to learn Chinese, he will write down study notes for Science and English on the flash cards too.

IMG 9422

At the same time, I can teach him penmanship.  Like write the Chinese word in the centre.

Use the Chinese brush to write.

Slowly increase the strength on the strokes.

This kind of opportunity is very rare and I felt I need Jay Jay to learn it.

IMG 9423

For the Chinese one is very simple.  Simply write down the 必读字 and 笔写字 from the text book.

IMG 9424

I also made Kay Kay to stick around to see what his brother is learning and doing.  The same thing will apply to him 2-3 years later.

IMG 9430

I also have a chance to teach him all other things.  Such as

大西洋, 太平洋, 印度洋, etc.  Some of the Oceans names.

航海 VS 航空.  Where can you use some of the characters.

IMG 9435

His spelling list.  One of the benefit is you can always bring out the cards again to revise.  Instead of looking at the boring spelling list paper.

You can shuffle the cards so you always have a different orders of the spelling list.

IMG 9497

He further improve this.  By writing another card that has words he first time learned and can’t remember.  (the yellow one).

IMG 9499

So, he is now learning more and more self learning tools to make him learn things on his own at his own pace.

So far we are very please with his own self learning ability.  We don’t have to tell him what to do, he will finish his homework promptly without reminding him.

He is actually very proud of this.  :)

Jay Jay's New Golf Swing

Date:  Oct 21, 2015

Today, Jay jay has learned how to turn the hip.  And his swing is just so good that I enjoyed watching the video over and over and over and over again.

I can’t even learn so fast like him.

Yeah I know I know is exam period coming soon, but could help it.  As long as he has school off day, I will try sent him to practise.  HaHaHa...

Well done Jay!

IMG 2398

Here are some of the golf swing highlights in slow-mo.

I love to take the slow mo so that you can see how he carried the golf club up, got chicken wings or not, and how his hip turned and how he hit the ball and follow thru in a perfect camera posture.  Well done Jay.

A bit overswing at the back.  But this is a very good shot.  It is 160m, rolling a further 10 meter may be.  And I am sure he Jay Jay has out driven his mum with this shot.  hahaha

No over swing, and the hip turn is good.  And the hit is powerful for the 9 year old boy.

This is not the slow mo.  And look at his hitting, with more practise I am sure he got the chance to compete against the P5 & P6 in his class.  :)

Hopefully this coming Sunday, the haze is gone, and they can proceed with the Monthly Competition on the 9-hole game.  But because he just changed his swing, he might need the hang of getting knowing about his distance.  He no longer can use the Driver for some holes.  His 7-Iron can reach 100 meter too with this swing.

IMG 2330

Good Luck Jay Jay!

Chinese Compositions - Final Preparations

Date:  Oct 14, 2015

Tomorrow is the Chinese SA2 Paper 1 exam, which is the Chinese Composition.  50 minutes to write at least 80 words.

This is how I am going to prepare Jay.

IMG 2009

[Revisions]

1.  Print out all the compositions that he has done, and asked him to read.

IMG 2061

[Encouragement]

2.  While reading, I will highlight those easy words to start the sentence with a market pen.  Make him feel good.  Encourage him.  And teach him what are the words he used will get more points.

[Incentives]

3.  No more new writings.  It is enough for the past month for him to do all these Compo writings.

4.  Let me play at least 30 minutes of iPad/Games before sleep.  :)

Here are some of the 满江红 compositions that I would like to share.  It is interesting.  These are the past 3 days compositions he has done using writing, instead of dictations on the iPad/iPhone.  And I think he learned a lot from the past few days, especial learn how to open the sentence.

[Example 1]  This is to describe what do you do on a Sunday morning.

IMG 2062

When he first wrote it, most of the sentence structure seems correct.  But the content does not match closely to the pictures given.  So, I decided to scrutinise the Compo and teach him how to use some useful words to start the Compo.

IMG 2049

For correction, I asked him to do it on dictation (without letting him see the correction which I went thru with him), so that he can grasp the idea quick and fast.

IMG 2054

[Example 2]  How the little girl learns to prepare her bags before sleep.

IMG 2063

Usually, I gave him 30-40 minutes to think and write.

This is important so that he gasps the idea of timing.  He cannot think too long.  What ever he thought of writing must always registered in his mind.  And he needs half of the time to write it down.

Again, the story line has to in line with the pictures.

And most of the time, he likes to use the conversation way of speaking chinese and write it into his compo.

I taught him how to use 觉得,顺手,第二天,发现, 原来, 老师知道了,答应, etc.

IMG 2052

This is the corrected copy using dictation, without looking at the notes above.

IMG 2055

[Example 3]  Talks about the boy helping a old man cross the road and explain to teacher why he is late for school.

IMG 2064

This is what he came up with.  Not too bad.

So, sometimes, it is also depending on the pictures given.  If for things that he is familiar of course he will do it well.  Those that he is not familiar, Jay tends to 转牛角尖.  That is perfectly normal.

IMG 2053

But I am glad to see him quite comfortable taking all these compositions.  He is not afraid any more, and he wanted to get high marks this time.

That is all needed from him.

[Example 4]

Sometimes, you can ask your child to write something you see.  Not necessary to have the 4 pictures.

IMG 2051

This is the corrected version.

IMG 2050

[Example 5]

Sometimes, you can also asked the child to write super long story just to see how well he can write.

IMG 2057

IMG 2058

[Example 6]

I found that when the kid was given the iPhone to do the dictation, they are like super excited like that.  If you ask them to start writing on paper, they are like so sad.

IMG 2056

Like what I say, the best way to prepare is to constantly do it.  Practise make perfect.

IMG 2059

Practice make perfect.

But don’t expect him to be very good in writing in the first year.

At least you know that his confident has increased by a lot that is the achievement.

Good luck!
