Encourage Your Kid to Draw Draw (画画)

Date:  Apr 21, 2012

You can be creative when you teach your kid how to draw.

We have enrolled Jay Jay for Spring Carnival drawing competition in his school.

So, we started with discussing with him what he wanted to draw about the topic of "Spring Carnival"?

- He said, last year spring carnival got rain, but no rainbow.  So, he wanted a rainbow in his drawing.  And specially make the comment that, after the rain, there is only a little sun, and we can see rainbow.

- He said, I am selling Cris Cross Apple Jam.  And Kay Kay selling Curry Chicken.

- He said, but Kay Kay very naughthy and he don't want to sell Curry Chicken, and push NaNa to sell.  And Kay Kay himself go play with the toy stall.

- He said, I wanted to draw the tent in the carpark.

OK, after discussing with him, the drawings seems to have a lot of element in there...  And he had never drew such a complicated drawings before.  And its going to be hard to teach him how to draw each details in such a short time, and yet still maintain his interest in this drawing.

So, this is what I do...

- I taught him that we could change the drawing into an "Art Piece" which combine paper arts and drawings.  At least when there is a paper cutting action in it, his spirit will maintain high.

- So, we discuss, we decided that the clouds, the sun and the grass and the tents will be paper cutting of colorful papers.

- So, I show him how to draw a cloud, he follow how to draw a cloud with a big marker pen.  Then, cut the cloud out.  As you can see, even cutting, he had try his best to not to cut away the black marker pen.  Then, once you have all the paper cuttings, you let him decide where and how he wanted to put the tents, the clouds , the sun and the grass.  Well, although it is not drawn porportionally, but it's OK la.

- Its a NO-NO to comment "The sun is too big, the grass is too thick." (although from the artistic angle, these comments are valid)  All these comments must not be told in front of him.  So, try say "WOW, Excellent!, I like the sun".  This is to encourage him to keep designing and drawing.

- So, he wanted the rainbow, so, we used crayons for the rainbow.  Not too bad.  Remember, always give encourage comments.  "Good Job!  Jay"

- Then, I cut out a lot of blue pieces of square rectangle paper.  This is for him to practise to write the name of the stall on it.  i.e. "Jam", "Toy", "Curry Chicken".  Now, you can see why I need to ask him to do the paper cutting.  Which he enjoys it.  Because, if you drew wrongly on one, you can always have another, and simply choose the best one and stick it onto your drawings.  Otherwise, sometimes, if he really draw directly onto the drawing paper, there is always 50% to have a bad one, and he will have to "redraw" another one.  Using such paper cutting method, he is able to make a good art piece, and yet not mess up the whole drawings.

- Lastly, drawing the kids.  I told him some times in an art piece, when you start learning to draw, you do not have to draw every in there.  You can draw the few most important people you wanted to draw.  Next, I google "Stick Man" and show it to him.  And it is an art piece, you do not have to dtaw the real people in there.  I ask him, what is his feeling when he goes to Spring Carnival.  He said, "Very happy".  So, I taught him to draw a circle, and draw the happy face.  OK.  He got to excited about this paper cutting, he asked, "can I draw the circle and cut it out?"  Of course you can.  So, he cut the circle face, and draw the happy big smile on each face, and stick it onto the drawings.  Then, use a pencil to draw the "Stick" body.  He commented "So Simple!"

- Finally, the finishing touch is to draw the stall in brown, and the surrounding in grey and yellow.

And that finished the master art piece for the submission.  And Jay Jay is very happy and proud to submit it.

Of course, always teach the kid not to expect to high in competition.  Do your best.

At the same time, the teacher also ask a favor to do the signboard.  So, this is what me and Jay Jay come up with.  Simple design.
