Badminton as a CCA

Date:  Dec 6, 2015

Beside swimming (learn not to be drown), Taekwondo (learn self-defence), one of the major extra sport activity I sent the kids to is Badminton.

They learned their badminton from Singapore Badminton School.

It seems that they have some arrangement with the Sport Centre, as they always get the court #1-#2-#3 on Saturday 10am-12noon.

There are of course many other coaches and badminton school teaching at the same venues.  But I always see them changing different courts and sometimes never appear on Saturday (I am guessing those private coaches had some hard time booking the courts)

I think badminton is one of the easier sport activities that both the boys can learn, and they can play with each other in future.

Of course, they can also play with their classmates, friends and even future girl friends.  hahaha

IMG 5546

The kids will have to learn the basics.  One step at the time.  Kay has been taking the lesson since March I think.  And so far, he loves the game, and has been eagerly learning from the coaches.  He is only 6 years old, so I have no rush for him.  But the time when he reach P3, he should be able to have enough skills to join the Badminton squad.

It is a very sweating 2-hours training each Saturday.  And I think the kids really have fun!  They even have fun playing with the coaches.

I can see Jay Jay started to love and appreciate the games.

I don’t want them to be champion, but to train their body in this sport will help them to get fit.

Especially for Jay, he needs to get fitter and reduce his weight.  :)

Jay Jay Back In Action In Badminton

Date:  Sep 20, 2015

The kids has a lot of sport activities each week.  This is one of them where both brothers enjoy playing.

Screen Shot 2015 09 20 at 7 00 40 am

Jay Jay just recovered from a knee cut injury.  But seems like he has fully recovered.  This is his first training since resting 2 weeks for the injury.

Seems to me that he has finally learned how to get rid of his elbow problem when hitting the shuttlecock.  He uses to bend too much on his elbow.

But this week, I can see that he has improved a lot in this area.

Also, the foot work is starting to get better.

Can lar… next time can “xian char bo” using badminton.  :)

Foot work is important.  That is why I also please to see how Kay Kay practise his foot work.  Well done Kay!

I think he can become better than his brother Jay Jay in 1-2 years time.  hahahahaha  Good work Kay!

Badminton is a sport I like.  I think it is the only sport I like.

May be it is the gene, so, the two boys also likes to play badminton.

For Jay is for fitness.

For Kay is for fun!

Kay Kay Moves to the Next Level in Badminton Class

Date:  June 8, 2015

Kay Kay used to use a no-name no-brand badminton racquet that I bought from Taobao China.

He gave away his junior racquet to his good buddy Colette.  So, he has to use that China racquet to start his badminton lesson.

Few days before May 20, Kay Kay uses his badminton coach’s badminton racquet and did pretty well in returning the shots.

So, he came back and tell me about it.

So, I decided to upgrade his badminton racquet.

He is now holding one of the lightest racquet available in the market produced by Lining sport, I think.

IMG 2766

Last week, the badminton coach is testing his shot, and surprisingly to see that Kay Kay can hit back all the shots correctly with correct postures.

So, after that, she put him to the next level.  Which is a court just beside for students who knows how to hit the shuttlecock.  Jay Jay is on the third court which is level 3.

So, he felt so proud of himself and put in a lot of efforts learning together with the older ko-ko and jie-jie.

He is happily learning new skills in this mid-level class.  By the time he reach P3, I suppose he will be much better commanding the racquet.  hahaha

All these ko-ko and jie-jie is much taller than him.  All of them is P1 to P6 level now.  That is why he is shortest among all of them.  He has not celebrate his birthday, that makes him 5.5 years old.

Let’s see how he pick up this sport in future.

Kay Kay, 加油!

Kay Kay Badminton After 3rd Class

Date:  Apr 5, 2015

It is amazing to watch the Kay Kay grew up so fast.

Especially with the help of his brother Jay Jay.  He has grown to a fine young boy.

He knows what he wants.

He wants to learn badminton.

And he gets his chance to join the badminton class.

DSC00395

He seems to love to play badminton.

A passion that is much more than his brother has.

DSC00358

This is how it looks after the 3rd class at Singapore badminton school @ Clementi.  3 weeks ago, he does not even touch badminton racquet.

I think he is doing well.

And this is his friend in the badminton class.  An Indian boy who has taken the lesson for almost 2 terms.  And he is very good.  So, Kay Kay says he wants to be as good as him.

DSC00413

2 days before.  Uncle Rusdi takes the time to train him.

And he increases his ball sense.

IMG 0301

He is trained to hit the ball to the target area during that training.

IMG 0310

1-Day ago.  He asked me to bring him down to train his serving.

And he can finally serve the ball over the net.

IMG 0325

And the more I played with him, the more I enjoyed learning that his skill has grown up day by day.

IMG 0333

One day, he will be like his brother like that.   Good in sport.

That is why we started to expose him to all kind of sports.

Kay Kay First Badminton Class

Date:  March 21, 2015

Kay Kay last week attended one of the “badminton play date” session with his brother Jay, together with Gwen and Colette and Ashlyn.

We have to thank Colette’s mommy, another sport enthusiast who book the court and drive the kids.

Gwen’s daddy is a badminton enthusiast.  He macam like play badminton 5 days a week like that.

But Gwen’s daddy is good.  He knows how to play and train the kids.

Here, he is training Kay Kay and Colette.  Both kids sure have fun!

This is probably the first time Kay Kay playing badminton “seriously”.  Uncle Rusdi says he has “ball sense”.

So, what happen next is Kay Kay comes to mommy again and requested to join his brother Jay Jay in the badminton school.

So, early in the morning, we fill in the application forms, and prepare the cheques and we enrol him into Singapore Badminton School.  I asked the coach weather a K2 (6 years old) can be in the class.  The coach says as long as he got the heights he can play.  So, today is Kay Kay first lesson taking badminton class.

Here the two young coaches trying to get him up to speed holding the badminton racquet the correct way, etc.

IMG 9645

I sat at the far end and watch how he learned.  And I must say, he is different from Jay Jay.  He really has that “serious face” of learning.  And he is very focus.

IMG 9648

Kay learning the foot works.  Got a bit confuse of the direction.  But this is his mommy fault.  I think Kay Kay by nature is left hander.  But his mommy was forcing him to use right hand all the time.  So, that is why I watch his stance, naturally he will do a certain action and then, feel awkward to continue the rest as it is not nature.  But let’s see how it goes.

Learning how to hit the shuttle.

Here, he puts what he learned into action.

Now the forehand.  His forehand is quite ok.  That is why the coach ask other kids to look at him, as he can hit back the shuttle almost every time.

I guess this is his ball sense.  For this, he is much better than his brother.  The brother Jay has to work very extra hard to build the ball sense.  For Kay, it seems natural.

After the lesson, he wants some more practise.

IMG 9745

This is Jay Jay’s lesson with the coach.  I can see after 2 years of efforts he can hit the shuttle quite confidently already.  This is good fitness for Jay Jay.  :)

Lessons Learned From Badminton

Date:  July 12, 2014

Today, I went early to Nan Hua (Singapore Badminton School’s Training Venue) to see how Jay Jay is coping wight his badminton lesson.

IMG 7263

I am happy to see that he now rally with his friends in the lesson.  And finally, he can hit a few long rallies with his friends.  I can tell that he is having lot’s of fun time here!

Here are some of the random thoughts I have when I thought about the lessons learned from Jay’s badminton class.

1.  More practise more better!  I can remember more than a year ago, when Jay Jay first took up badminton.  During that time, he does not have much ball sense, and he is also much heavier.  But after more than a year time spending in the badminton class, I can see a lot of improvement.  He is now able to serve quite OK, and return shots.  Although he still need to work on his moves and his forehand and backhand, comparing to few months back, I can see the advancement.  So, I believe that, you do not have to have talent in a certain thing, but as long as you continue practising it every week, eventually, you can master the basic technique of the game, and you will be able to play well or play better than the average person.  This is precisely the words I used when I spoken to Jay after his lesson.  The most important lesson he has to learned is, no one is good at anything at the beginning, as long as you put your heart into learning, and you train every week, sometimes you do need to train more than the talented players, eventually, you will be able to play better than average people.

IMG 7232

2.  Tennis & Badminton Doesn’t Mix.  I finally learned the biggest lesson of all.  Before that, I always think that Jay Jay is capable to cope up with both Tennis and Badminton.  And even Golf.  But I guess I was wrong.  2-3 months ago, I found that Jay Jay is struggling with both his badminton and tennis.  Why?  He played badminton like tennis, always unawarely give a big swing on his racquet, and cause the shuttlecock fly left and right.  And interestingly, he played tennis like badminton, where under pressure, he will swing the tennis racquet half way and stop with the wrist motion.  I sensed the problem, and finally, I made Jay to make up his mind, to choose ONLY one from tennis and badminton.  After some days of thinking and after evaluating his performance of both sports, he agrees to stop his tennis training.  Yes, that means, Jay no longer seeing his 6 tennis girl buddies.  HaHaHa… But I am glad that he stopped his tennis training.  After a few weeks without tennis, he played the badminton just like what it should be.  Using the wrist.  And he seldom use a full tennis swing to swing his badminton racquet.

3.  What is the purpose of learning badminton?  Sometimes, we need to spell out and bear in mind of the purpose of learning.  For Jay, we let him have full freedom to choose the sports he wanted to learn.  He gave up tennis because he does not want to confuse badminton with tennis.  He still have his taekwondo, swimming, golf and soccer.  So, as a parent, in my opinion, we should not set a lot of expectations for the kids.  So, I don’t set any expectation for him.  I just keep enrol him every month for the training.  I know he is now average, not above average, which I don’t really care.  All I care is a) he got extra exercise opportunities to manage his weight.  You know, the health promotion board think he is overweight.  b) he is happy to swing the racquet and rally with his friends.  I know he always enjoys talking to his peer in the badminton class.

4.  Focus Your Mind.  Learning badminton is not only doing the physical.  At the same time, you are also doing a lot of hand and legs coordinations.  And in order to do it well, you need to focus your mind too.  The coach is constantly teaching them how to do that.  Discipline is also another thing he shall learned from the class.  And I am glad that today what I have seen, is something new.  Whenever he did not make the shot, he will swing his racquet a few times to imagine how he would have picked up the shuttlecock.  I have not seen him do that before, or may be it has been too long that I have not been to see his training.  But I am glad that he actually now can think how to make a shot or how he would have make a shot if he do this or that.  Hopefully, he can apply this to his academy work too.  As it is important to know what you have done wrong and how to correct it.

IMG 7248

5.  It is all about investment.  Some people says why I sent him to too many sports lesson.  In my opinion, every sport lesson gives different of mental training.  I like his soccer training too.  Got one time, the soccer coach ask one student to do a particular movement, and that student refuse to do it right.  So, anytime he did wrongly, the whole class will have to do push up few times.  What?  One student do wrong, whole class penalised?  Yes.  because soccer is about team work, so, it is important that the team mates should help him too.  That student also feel bad when he see that his wrong movement, will cost the whole group do push up.  I love this sort of training, as your kid will never never learned such lesson from academy school work.  It has to come from these sort of sport lessons.  So, if you have some extra cash lying there, you should get your kid to be involved in few sports.  Remember, it should be the sports that he likes pretty much.  Don’t force him to go to class, it should be himself making the decision.  Jay made all his choices in the class.  If you invest more, the kid will learn more in different aspect, and it will help to learn more life skills which you can’t get it from the school.

Now Jay is in P2.  When he gets to P3 and onwards, may be he has lesser chance to learn more sports.  So, during P1 and P2, if can, please sent your kids to more sports class to learn all these valuable lessons.   As a parent, you always happen when you see your child pick up a new thing.

Portable Badminton Net for Kids

Date:  March 17, 2014

Sometimes when you want to play badminton, and you can’t book a court right away.  Then, how?

But most of the times you know that the badminton court must be booked 2 weeks in advance or 1 month in advance than got space.

If you go down stairs and play, there is no NET.  So, how?

Look at what I bought from Taobao this time.

The Portable Badminton Net.

IMG 1723

Yup!  You can build a net from this kid.  This compartment also big enough to place in two badminton racquets.

IMG 1724

Within 2-3 minutes you can easily assemble the badminton net.

IMG 1726

The two yellow stick is extendible.  And simply lock it in both side.

IMG 1727

Press to unlock and adjust the height of the stick.

IMG 1730

Easily slot in the net.  And that’s it!

IMG 1731

It is portable.  And it is about 3KG to 4KG light that nia.  Yes, that light.

IMG 1733

I bought it from Taobao.  And I did not see this sort of things in Singapore.

It is on promotion, so, RMB198.  That is roughly about S$40.

IMG 1736

Quite Cool.  We played badminton for almost 1 hour.  And this net is GOOD.

Playing downstairs is different with the net now.

Badminton - Slowly Learning The Skills

Date:  April 26, 2013

This is the third month since Jay Jay first learned badminton.  Before attending Singapore Badminton School, he has never been exposed to badminton before, i.e. never saw badminton on TV or seeing other people playing.

I am glad that he likes the sports and is taking it pretty seriously.

So, this week, I decided to go downstairs to play with him and train him more on badminton after dinner.  This is to help him to burn some energy after dinner and before sleep too.

IMG 1018

Today, I refine his serving.  For the past few weeks, I think the school has not started teaching the serving, so, he does not actually know how to serve properly.  So, I let him practise serving, and after 2 days of efforts, I can see improvement in serving.  Also the racquet also still a bit long for him so that a proper serve at his heights will have chances hitting the ground.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/aZkLAG5Tiyo

Next, is to find him a good teacher.  Which is the "Wall".  Mr. Wall is every where.  And Mr. Wall is a very powerful badminton teacher.  Mr. Wall will never miss any shot thrown at him, and he will return the shot to you guarantee.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/fHr22gvyjZc

So, today, he can do at most 3 return shots.  If he keep doing this, he can probably increase his ball sense, perfect his forehand and he always have a partner to play with.  hahaha

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/XG4-8webKNs

Only thru practise, then, he can play with his friends.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/bde0FaQyFIU

I think in no time in future, these 4 kids should be able to play badminton on their own during weekends.

Badminton Diary: Lesson #3

Date:  Feb 16, 2013

Today is Saturday.  So, Jay Jay has his usual badminton lesson from Singapore Badminton School at Nan Hua Primary School.  I have changed his timing to 11am.  Where there are fewer students in this time slot.  I think the student to coach ratio is very important.  Today, we have 4 coaches teaching the kids.  This is Jay Jay new badminton outfit and pants.

IMG 7302

The coach spent more time when the class size is smaller.  Unlike the 9am slot, usually has more than 10 students.  By committing to this time slot, Jay Jay can only have Saturday afternoon free now.  But this is chosen by him, and had nothing to do with me.  hahaha

IMG 7308

This week, they teach forehand.  As you can see in the video, Jay Jay is learning to hit forehand.  Did not have much success though...

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/QXfd52N1CHE

Today, there are two coaches teaching the beginner's class.  And it is very systematic.  So, the coach in black will teach them forehand, and then, they will will go to the plastics bag station to hit the hanging plastic bag.  Then, they bring their 10 shuttlecock to the coach in red, and practising hitting the shuttlecock.

WOW… HE hits almost 7-8 shuttlecock thrown to him and almost every return is approximate at the same locations.  I think the way he spent 2 hours like this learning, he should be able to play with me in few months time.  Cool!

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/qoPHjin93Gw

As usual, once got time, he talks and talks and chit chat with girls.  hahahaha

Singapore Badminton School #2

Date:  Feb 2, 2013

This weekend, Jay Jay has to take his Taekwondo grading test in the morning.

IMG 6623

So, I changed his badminton lesson to 11am-1pm.  And he did the exercise together with the senior students.

DSC01754

But later, his beginner group has only 5-6 people in the class.  It is better than last week, as 9am-11am slot got more students.  With a smaller size class, the coach will have more time to look at each individual student.  So, it is quite good.  I think Jay Jay can learn more from smaller size class.  So, I plan to change him to this smaller class.

DSC01778

The kids are doing warm ups.

IMG 6625

Jay Jay now is more familiar with most of the stretching now.

DSC01753

Of course he runs too on Saturday.

DSC01757

I am sure by now he already reduce 1-2 KG after running during the morning time in the CARE programme.

DSC01761

And little Kay Kay just sit by the side doing his painting on my iPad mini.

DSC01774

With a smaller group, the coach are able to place her attention back onto individual students, so, Jay Jay is doing lots of exercise and routines this week.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/QVJA5wqkpAM

Throwing the shuttlecock is seems to be a game to Jay Jay.  But it actually help in making him to learn what is badminton about.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/cnBcr-xkpu4

He just love to play the shuttlecock.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/_ic-QMKc9iQ

OK.  The Nan Hua Primary School security actually come and ask the parents to wait at the canteen instead of upstairs.  So, I have no footage or photos of Jay learning in the badminton court.  Hope he slowly picks up the badminton and learn how to play.  He seem pretty interested in hitting the shuttlecocks.

I just found out that my domestic helper major in PE (Physical Educations).  And she is teaching history and PE in a secondary school back in Philippines.  And she is in her university school team for Badminton and Volleyball.  Her son has recently won #1 from a national table tennis competition in Palau.  And her son, 14 years old this year, has made it to the national youth junior table tennis team.  Her husband actually spent about S$200 for hiring a good coach for her son.  Wow!  So, I asked her to train my son and play with him during afternoon whenever is possible.  Cool!

Another Great Badminton Sunday!

Date:  Jan 27, 2013

After Taekwondo class, we always had a quick and nice lunch and then we head to Clementi Sport Hall to play badminton.  Jay Jay is in his third week since he first learn how to play the game.  So far, he is enjoying it.

DSC01582

His buddy - Lukas has very good ball sense.  He can hit almost any shuttlecock head for him.

DSC01576

So, me and Riandy's daddy help to play with the kids.

DSC01588

Jay Jay tries to jump and return a shot.

DSC01585

From nothing to now can hit the shuttlecock, I think it is a good achievement.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/gllwZ9YR-sA

So, the more practice he has, the more confident he shall be when hitting the shuttlecock.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/WbQqSN37H8Y

Well, of course, the great thing is while the kids resting, taking break, drinking water, the parents can play for a while.  Although it is just a short 15-20min, it is great workout.  I actually feel quite exhausted after returning the shots from Riandy's daddy.  Wow.. Indonesian player very powerful la.  hahahaha

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/16dBbAIU6e8

Another buddy of theirs - Conrad join in the fun.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/YtEIuAmbrII

So, badminton is now one of the family sport.  :)

Singapore Badminton School

Date:  Jan 25, 2013

I bought Jay Jay his badminton racket since 3 weeks ago, and every since, he says he loves badminton.  In his school SS activity book, he wrote down and says "I am good at badminton…".  I was like, HUH?  How can you write down that if you only pick up the sport 3 weeks ago??  But the thing is, if the kid likes the sport, let him had the chance to be part of it.

IMG 6461

So, after some huge deep thoughts, I enrolled him in Singapore Badminton School and hope that he can learn the badminton sport.  Since Singapore Badminton School has a training centre at Nan Hua Primary School, it is just perfect.  So that will eat up the Saturday 9-11am timing which is still quite OK.

IMG 6419

Here is his new T-shirt Singapore Badminton School uniform.  After you pay the fees for 8 weeks (S$200) and the $50 registration fee, you get this t-shirt.  The coach is from China.  He has 3 assistants, mostly Singaporean.  The class size is a bit big I think may be is because it is a popular time slot.  He is trying to move other people away from 9am slot to 11am.

IMG 6420

He is learning the sport with his good friend, Lukas.  It is good to have a friend in there.

IMG 6439

The teaching coach give them warm up, running the basketball court.  Then, she start to train them in moves.  It is important to have the "badminton moves".

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/oxFYRZpu-jE

Then, he learn the crab move.  Walk like a crab.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/r550ZWptE7g

Zig Zag move.  The kids have trouble at first in this move.  But they can learn it very fast.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/3_akUIVpWe4

This is the part I love.  Throwing the shuttlecock.  Actually this will setup the student badminton pose.  How do you throw the shuttlecock and how far can you throw.

IMG 6441

Here is how they throw the shuttlecock video.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/BTSEeUUj2N8

Learn how to hold the badminton racket properly.  Now I understand how did the players always have two hands raise up.  HaHaHa

IMG 6443

They do it in a systematic way.  Learning the badminton way.  So, hopefully they can pick up the skills and have fun in playing badminton.

IMG 6447

Then, they go back upstairs practising.  The senior guys are training hard up there.  It is time to put them on test.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/Vc6wVcWiSm8

They also get to hit the plastic bag.  If you hit it correctly, it will have this nice smashing sounds.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/GuMznZB0858

That wraps up the first day of his badminton lesson.  And of course, we also book the court at Clementi Sport hall on Sunday 2-4pm to give them practising, and hope that the kids can play with the parents soon.  HaHaHaHaHaHa

IMG 6462
