Kay & His New Bike (5.9KG 16" Wheel) - Islabikes

Date:  May 24, 2015

I bought Kay Kay’s first IslaBikes in 2013.  http://miniliew.blogspot.sg/2013/11/jay-his-new-bike-55kg-nia-unboxing.html

It was a CNOC 14, and it weight only 5.5KG.  At that time, Kay was about 14KG body weight.

IslaBikes provide the lightest weight for him to handle.  And in 30 minutes he is on two wheels.

IslaBikes:  http://www.islabikes.com/us/index.html

You can take a look at their website for more info about the bike.

Kay Kay has grown much taller now.  And his weight has passed 18KG.

The CNOC 14 no longer suitable for him to cycle.

So, I asked my friend in US to buy a new 16” Wheel, CNOC 16 for him.

IMG 2870

Although the box looks really big, but the actual packing weight is 7.9KG.

IMG 2898

Thanks to Mommy to pick up the bike from our friend in US.  And bring it back to Singapore in her last business trip to US.

IMG 2868

5.9KG is only 400g more heavier than CNOC 14. (14” Wheel)

IMG 2905

Let’s unbox it.

So, inside the box, there is a frame with wheels.  Plus a box for the pedals.

IMG 2908

There are simple instructions to put the pedals on.  Here you turn it anti-clockwise.  The other side is clockwise.

IMG 2914

Here is the bike.

IMG 2917

It is a much bigger bike.  Below one is CNOC 14, the old 14” wheel size bike.

IMG 2912

It stand much taller than the old one.

IMG 2910

I also compare it with Jay’s previous bike, Trek 16Jet.  This bike is about 2 - 3 times lighter than the 16Jet.  And it is about the same wheel size.

IMG 2919

In 5 minutes, he got used to this higher bike.

IMG 2937

Immediately in the afternoon, after we come back from Taekwondo, we are on the way to test drive the new bike.

IMG 3162

So far so good.  Taking the opportunity to teach them and remind them again and again on the road cycling rules.

IMG 3168

Then we cycle to the Canal there.

IMG 3173

The reason why I bought this bike for him is because, I serious don’t think a 15-16KG boy can handle a 15-16KG bike.  That is 1:1 ratio.

So, a bike that is slightly under 6KG, is just perfect for a 18KG Kay Kay today.

He does not need to spent a lot of effort to pedal.  There is no gear on this bike, but it is light enough so that it can be pedal fast.

IMG 3179

Jay's bicycle is like a mountain bike with gears and suspension.  It’s heavy.  But 45KG Jay sure can handle it.

Kay’s bicycle has no gear.  Just a bicycle.

IMG 3180

We did a 10KM ride today effortlessly.

IMG 3175

Kay loves his Islabike.

Kay Bicycle - Gadgets & Lights

Date:  Nov 9, 2013

笑眯眯!

What a big smile!

IMG 1346

As you can see this week, ever since he can ride his bike, he has been putting this sort of smile on his face.

Today… What did he do?

Installing a red LED light.

IMG 1350

Don’t know where he finds, the bike stand.  I did not even know we have such a thing at home.

IMG 1351

Kay Kay have three bell on his bike.  The basketball bell, the Bird horn and the normal bell.

IMG 1345

You see my two big white LED lights?  Is my bicycle looks like a motorbike?

IMG 1353

Now you know why he is smiling the whole day!

Kay Bicycle - No Need Slope Anymore

Date:  Nov 8, 2103

The amazing things about kids is they can pick up and learn things fast.  (As long as they have the confident)

IMG 1209

Check this out.

He placed his leg feet on the left pedal, and using his right feet to PUSH the bike.  On a flat ground.  No Slope.

So, as he gain enough speed, wala…. he is pedalling again on the

I did not teach him that.

He sort of figure that part out by himself.

IMG 1210

And quickly he places both his legs onto the pedals once he gain enough speed.

IMG 1211

It is quite cool to see your son learn things by his own.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/FPMrovzFcig

And today, he can race with his mom.

He is now riding a little bit faster than I jog.

IMG 1213

No wonder he is so happy today.

Two Wheel Bicycle - Learn in Less Than 2 Hours

Date:  Nov 7, 2013

This is probably the fastest way to make your kid picked up cycling fast.  Wahahahahahahaha

The 5.62kg ISLABIKES arrived on Monday night.  So, I let young Kay cycle about 30 minutes by using the legs to push the bicycle in the living room, dining area, etc.

The next day is raining, so, we did not do anything.

The third day, we went down to continue to push the bike using the two legs and learn how to balance.  About 40 minutes.

TODAY….

I installed the pedals onto the ISLABIKES.

And then, I asked him to roll down from the small slope at the lift lobby there.

 IMG 1053

Slowly… let it roll down by itself.

 IMG 1054

And QUICKLY place his legs onto the pedals.

IMG 1055

And start pedalling hard!!!

IMG 1056

And the next thing you know, Kay Kay is pedalling his bicycle.

IMG 1057

The balancing is just perfect.

IMG 1058

 Let’s take a look again!

1.  SLOPE is very important for him to learn how to cycle.

2.  The “Weeeeeee” sound effect is also very important.  When you say “Weeeeeee” means, your legs has to be lifted up and place it on the pedals.

3.  Then, encourage him by asking him to “Pedal hard!"

Kay Kay already so happy until he forgot how much handwork he has put in to learn how to cycle.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/PNcMRhT3qj8

Let’s see it from the front video.

OK.  He know show to swing his bike left and right.  So, means that he is learning to balance.  He is also piling up all these experience.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/NAMeyLB8dDM

So, my wife saw Kay Kay riding his bike on his own just now.  And her jaw open very wide.

IMG 1062

One of the neighbour who’s daughter is learning how to bike on a 4-wheels bike saw Kay Kay yesterday still having some problem handling the balance.

But today, she saw Kay Kay pedalling his bicycle.  Both the domestic helper, the mom, and the daughter jaw dropped.

IMG 1066

Take a good look at this position.  Imagine that that the bike fell side way, and the frame or the tyre wheel will be leaning on his leg.  Because it is only 5.62kg, it does not hurt at all.  So, when it is not hurt, the kid >> (bigger) than the bike.  So, the kid feel safer, parents feel safer, and the kid increase his confident.

Now, imagine that my son Kay is 14kg, and is old bike is 10kg.  And when the bike fell sideway, will the frame break his leg??  possible.  Because the old bike is heavy.  The fell down force will be great.  And that will definitely cause pain to the kid.  When kid felt pain, NO NO.  They lost all the confidence and they cannot concur the fear.  So, learning how to ride will fail because the kid is in shocked and scared mode.

IMG 1068

So, of course, you don’t stop there.

打铁要趁热!

1.  Even very small incline road (small slope) also can give that extra push.  Take a look.

2.  Not far from there, there is another even smaller slope that looks like a flat road.  But you just tell Kay it is a slope and he simply believes it.  And he can pedals the bike from there.

But when he believe he is on the flat road, he still need confident and strength to pedal hard which he could not at the moment.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/GfQnH5nMOas

So, I am very happy to see Kay Kay finally pedalling.

More work to be taught.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/BslbWURjgUY

I got to ask my friend to see if his bike shop can bring in this bike or not.

GOOD JOB KAY KAY.  NOV 7 2013 is when you learn how to pedal!

Relearning The Balancing on ISLABIKES

Date:  Nov 6, 2013

One of the privilege of being a parent is that you get to teach your kids how to pedal a bicycle.  Most of the time, you will start with 4 wheels and then trying to concur the fear and pedal the 2 wheels bike.  You will see tears, blood, and frustrations.  That is life.  :)

Kay Kay is very light, about 13-14KG.  So, he cannot handle a heavy bicycle even it is a 4 wheels bike.  So, I have to specially order this ultra-light bike from ISLABIKES for him.  And I am very confident that he can learn how to ride a 2 wheel bikes with pedals very soon.

Jay and Kay is different build and different character.  So, we need different bike and different teaching methods.

Kay’s ISLABIKES:  http://miniliew.blogspot.com/2013/11/jay-his-new-bike-55kg-nia-unboxing.html

 IMG 1042

Yesterday it was rainy day.  So, we did not get any chance to ride the bike.  Today, the sky is clear, so, we have an hour time to play.

So, let’s start him with the smaller slope.  The slope just beside the lift.

You always wanted to make use of the slope to train your kids.

They will learn balancing very fast on the slope.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/eouEn6_Byj8

OK.  Sometimes, the kids is too over confident on it, you let him fall.

Wahahaha.  When he fell down, do not give out your hand.  Ask him to stand up on his own.

They have to learn how to pick themselves up when they fell.

Kay actually cries.  But after 1 minute.  He was having fun pushing the bike again.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/1w_ZS3ggmsE

Of course, just now he fell down.  He was going too fast and forgot that he has this little thing called “breaks”.  So, you teach him how to tekan the breaks.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/ejfksFl_xoo

After few minutes later he is able to ride up and down the bigger slope with no problem.

It’s getting very dark.  But he still have a lot of fun.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/Hf0ZzLXxQ8o

Let’s go to the lift lobby area again.  Brighter.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/ss78gAJhELg

This time, I asked him to pretend he is peddling without the pedals.  And he really follows.. hahaha

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/4T5BGTcbhwU

I am guessing, another 1-2 hours practising the balancing, we should be able to install the pedals for him soon.

IMG 1035

Remember, SLOPE is very important for them to learn bicycle.

Kay & His New Bike (5.5KG Nia) - Unboxing IslaBikes

Date:  Nov 5, 2013

This is Kay Kay’s first Bike.  It is called "My First Bike”.  I bought it from my friend’s bike shop at “My Bikes Shop" http://mybikeshopsg.com.

IMG 1014

Kay Kay has been riding on this bike since February 2012 until mid-year 2013.

I blog about this fantastic bike.  Kay Kay loves his “small” bike.

This bike has NO pedals.  So, basically, Kay Kay have to master balancing on the two wheels.

And I got to admit, he did it very well.  Take a look at some of the videos in the following blog entry.

>> Kids & Bicycle:  http://miniliew.blogspot.sg/2012/02/kids-bicycle.html

Unfortunately, kids grown up very FAST!

By the time of September 2013, Just after Kay Kay turned 4 years old.  His “small” bike is no longer fit his legs.

Plus, when you use your leg power to push your bicycle, it is not as fast as Jay Jay pedal his bicycle.

Kay Kay grew taller!

So, we let him inherit Jay Jay’s Trek bike.

Unfortunately, the bike is about 10KG.  Kay Kay is only 14KG.  So, it is 2/3 of his weight.

Jay Jay can handle it, because by the time he ride this old bike, he is about 26KG.  That is why he can handle this Trek bike which he passed down to Kay.

>> Kay Bicycle - One Step At a Time:  http://miniliew.blogspot.sg/2013/09/kay-bicycle-one-step-at-time.html

Up until now, he cannot handle such a heavy bike.

NewImage

What is the Problem?

1.  My Frist Bike is great.  It is light, and east to move the bike.

2.  The red Trek Bike is too heavy for Kay.

3.  Most of the kids is small build now, as they don’t eat veggies (unlike Jay Jay).

4.  I searched thru almost ALL the bike shops in Singapore, and I cannot find one “light” bike.

5.  How do you expect a 14KG boy push a 10KG bike?  No way.

6.  Like that he can never learn biking during young age.

7.  Every kid is different in size build, and the courage of riding.  Not afraid of falling.

8.  My son - Kay is one of the kind where he is really afraid.

So, what is the solutions?

To Find A Lighter Bike

The solution is for Daddy to do research and google to find a new bike for Kay.

http://www.islabikes.com/us/bike_pages/cnoc14.html

Screen Shot 2013 11 05 at 8 11 44 am

And I have found it!

And it is only 12.4lbs which is about 5.6KG.

Screen Shot 2013 11 05 at 8 12 12 am

And I have gone thru so much trouble to make the order.  Because it does not have sophisticated online ordering systems.

So, I have to asked Borderlinx Concierge to help me to place order.

And it failed during the first order, and two week wasted.  Finally, Borderlinx placed the order for me after persistent chasing and complaining.

Today, the Islabikes is delivered to our home.

IMG 0938

The gross weight of the box is 9KG.  So just to demonstrate how heavy...

Jay, can you carry it?  Oh yes!

IMG 0944

Original box from Islabikes.

IMG 0947

Let’s unbox it!

IMG 0950

How light is this bike again?  No Joke!  TWO FINGERS can carry it.  Slightly less than 6KG.  (Actually 5.62KG).

一包米 = One Pack of Rice.

IMG 0951

Here is the bike.  Simple frame.  Very well done.  We decided not to attached the pedal first.  Let Kay Kay get used to riding it without pedals, and let him get used to balancing the bike, the body, the weight, etc.

IMG 0957

Luckily my mechanic still at work.  Please screw down the seat to Kay Kay’s height.  See, if Kay Kay grow another 6 inches, he can still ride this bike.  Good for 2-3 years.

IMG 0959

Very easy to screw and unscrew.

IMG 0960

So, it is a 14” frame.  CNOC 14.  From ISLABIKES.

IMG 0965

And Yup.  It is Kay’s height now.  Wearing a shoe will make a different.

You know how happy he is?  can tell from his face.

Do you know how sad he is when Jay Jay always go down with his friends and he has no bike to ride?

IMG 0970

Mommy, please go thru the installation process, to make sure every screw and bolts are in.

IMG 0975

The installation guides is very clear.

IMG 0977

OK.  Kay Kay, let’s see how you ride the bike.

At first, he very carefully pushing the bike.  Later 10 minutes, we shall see and check him out again.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/q3LUpgBzRHc

Now, let’s run thru a few details… Only one single screw to control the seat height.

IMG 0981

Very simple bike handling.  Kay little hand can handle the steering wheel.

IMG 0982

OK.  Take a look at the breaking system.

IMG 0987

OK.  Handling the break is no problem.  It is very easy and sensitive to break.  And the breaking is soft too.  It will break.  and the feeling of breaking is nice.

IMG 0986

Very simple gear.  No speed gear for Kay yet.

IMG 0983

Very simple design.  Elegant.

IMG 0984

What can I say more.  I compare this to many of the bikes I can find in Singapore, all of those are ugly.  This one is exceptionally great.

IMG 0985

OK.  Let’s go outside.  Please wear shoe.  I want to see how you handle the bike after you wear your “bike” shoe.

IMG 1001

No problem at all.

IMG 1008

Just push the bike to feel the balance.

IMG 1010

I am very sure Jay Jay is happy for his brother too.

IMG 1016

And lastly… Let’s ride 20 rounds in the living room.  Obstacle course.

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/v/z4IKH9WRM_w

That night, he sleep very well.  I bet you he has a lot of good dreams.

IMG 0989

Here is the bike cost.  in USD$.  The shipping is to ship within USA.

The total shipping cost is slightly above $200+.  So, if you know any one to to go to US, ask them to bring back is cheaper.

IMG 0976

The gross is only 9KG.

So, you can just dump it in the luggage check-in.

But the problem is how to place the order in US.  And it will take 2 weeks to build and deliver to the destination in US.

So, all the timing got to be right.

IMG 1026

I want my kids to learn how to ride a bike since young.  And I want them to enjoy the learning process.

So, that is why I bought this ultra light bike for Kay Kay.

Jay Jay came a long way.  It takes him 3 years to fully learn how to ride the bike.  I make a mistake to let him ride a 4 wheels bikes.  (with support)

That is how long of the time to take to unlearn it.

So, I am very confident that Kay Kay can learn how to ride 2 wheels bike in a month or even lesser time.  Let’s see and I will update.
