Let’s ask Master Kay to read the Chinese Book.

He is reading the first 100 words series.

As what I have said in my previous blog entry, the book introduce the same characters in the series.  So, it is very easy for Children to recognise the words.  And what you have learned in the previous books, thru repetitions, it will appears in the next books so that you can get familiarise fast.

I made a small mistake last time with Jay Jay.  I always thought that he went to school and learn the Chinese is enough already.  But it turns out that it is not enough.  That is why for Kay Kay, I will try my best to read with them, make them read Chinese books a few times a week, so that they get enough practise.

一个4岁的孩子应该知道什么？他应该知道他总是被完全无条件地爱着。

一位幼儿园老师的话

我最近在学校家长网上布告栏是看到一位妈妈的留言，她担心她4岁半的儿子懂的不够多。她这样写道：“4岁的孩子应该会什么？”

大部分的回复让我不仅觉得很难过，而且相当恼火。有一位妈妈罗列了一大堆她儿子会的事情。比如会数到100，了解行星，会写他自己的姓名等等。其他家长们也留言附和他们的孩子也懂的很多，有的孩子只有三岁。有几个人甚至在上面张贴相关的网页链接，不外乎什么年龄应该会什么等等。只有少数的几个人说每个孩子的发展进度不一样，不用太过担心。

这些回复十分地困扰我。他们给这个担忧的母亲列出了所有自己孩子会儿她的孩子不会的东西。我们生活在这样一个竞争激烈的文化里，甚至于我们的学龄前儿童已经开始追逐奖杯和炫耀。童年不应该是一场竞赛。

Indeed, like what I always encourages parents to do, is to provide your kids a true “Childhood”.  You can sent them to enrichment class, but you have to get your kids to “agree” and your kids must have interest in it.  You simply cannot force these courses into the kids schedule.  But some times, kids is like this… They say they like this they like that… after you sent them there, after 1-2 classes, they wanted to quit.  So, sometimes, it is up to you to negotiate with the kids so that they learn 1) they cannot simply anyhow making decision, 2) once they make the decision, they must at least complete a terms class.  It is a learning process.  Like Jay Jay, he got a lot of sport classes.  A lot of friend asked if I sent him too many sport classes?  I told my friends, it is not me who choose all these classes.  I should be glad that my son is making his own decision to choose what he wanted to learn.  And I love seeing him mingle around different groups of kids (in different classes) and thus learned the important social skills.  And most importantly, it is the laughter I see, and that is what I called “Happy Childhood!”.  As a father, I also try to learn to be a father.  So, I think “preserving” the happy childhood is important.  That is why you see why I video down a lot of home movies, why I blog all the interesting events he has attend during his childhood days.  By remembering these happy smiles, I think at least Jay will grow up to be a happy kids with positive personalities. 

So far, the only courses that Jay has quit is violin, and he chosen to replace it by learning Piano.  Of course, learning Piano is not for him to take exams.  Means I have no intention to sent him for gradings.  Learning how to play Piano is good enough to spice up one character.  For me, unless he asked for it, otherwise there is no need to go thru any gradings.

So remember HAPPY CHILDHOOD is the key.

This is a must.  The kids must always remember, daddy and mommy is always loving them.  Whatever daddy and mommy teach is important, because this is how to shape up a person’s character.  

他应该知道他是安全的，他应该懂得如何在公共场合、和别人在一起和在突发的情况下保证自己的安全。他应该知道谁是可以信任的人，如果他认为不对的事情他可以不做，不管是谁让他做。他应该知道他的人身权利，而且知道他的家人会无条件支持他。

她应该知道怎么笑，怎么闹，怎么搞怪和发挥想象力。她应该知道即使把天空画成橙色，给猫画上6条腿都没有问题。

他应该知道自己的兴趣并被鼓励发展它们。如果他对学习数学不太感兴趣，那么他的父母应该意识到，他在不久的将来也能学会，何不让他就沉浸在火箭船、绘画、恐龙和玩泥巴的世界里呢。

Yes.  The key of teaching kids is to be sensitive, be observant and know what your kid likes and dislike.  English, math or Chinese is essential.  But if going to these classes makes him sad, why not twist a little bit.  Like CMA is a abacus and mental math class, which is not under MOE curriculum.  But it was fun to see people using abacus to calculate sums.  So, the point is sending kids to enrichment class does not need to be following MOE directions.  Like how I teach Jay write in Calligraphy too.  I teach him words I like him to write.  I told him, you are a Chinese, and you need to learn this.  He understands.  

I removed him from Berries, because he simply don’t like it, and he was having lots of problems catching up in the Berries class.  But he has no problem to engage Private Tutor who spent quality 1-to-1 time with him, reading story books, teaching how to do homework.  As for English, sending him to BrainFit that can play 30min on computer learning (mostly games), and jumping on trampoline to play Hang man seems like a great choice.  So, you see, it does not have to be 100% following what MOE wants your kid to be, simply follows your heart, what you think they should learn and know.  i.e. Learn to enjoy happy childhood, learn to make friends at this age, learn to be happy all the time.  As for Kay, he is still 4 years old going into 5.  I simply left him full day with his friends at the preschool.  Since he likes Taekwondo, I let him remain in Tots class for almost 1.5 years.  No intention to move him up yet to normal grading class yet.  I do force him to learn swimming as I think swimming is life skills you need to pick up as early as possible.  But who does not love water?  

她应该知道这个世界是多么的神奇，她也是。她应该知道她是多么的美好、灿烂、充满创造力、热爱生活、富有同情心和奇妙的。她应该知道花一整天在户外做花环、做泥饼和搭童话屋比练习拼写要更值得，十分值得。

更重要的是，家长们需要知道些什么。

每个孩子学习走路、说话、阅读和算术都有他自己的速度，这跟他/她将来学得有多好没有太大的联系。

This is very important.  Every kids learning path and learning capability is different.  Most of them are going different ways, but eventually, they will cross each others.  For me for an example, my math my calculus sucks during my High Schools years, I even score a RED 55 back in my last year of high school math.  But 1 year after high school graduations when I came to Canada to further my studies, I did well in my math.  I can even teach all my classmates math and physics and chemistry.  So, kids learning is just like flowers.  There are so many different kinds of flowers and all of them does not bloom and blossom at the same time.  Some in Spring, some in Autumn.  The key is you need to know that.

最能让孩子将来有高学分的事情就是给孩子阅读。不是学习卡片，不是练习册，不是多高级的幼儿园，不是闪亮的玩具或电脑，而是父母每天早上或晚上（或两者），坐下来给他们读精彩的图书。

Yes.  When I am not busy, I try to read to them.  So, thanks to my wife travelling to US once a month for a week every month.  I got to spent quality reading time with my kids.  

成为班里最聪明最有成就的孩子不一定就最快乐。我们想给孩子提供帮助，但却让他们陷入了跟我们一样繁杂而充满压力的生活漩涡。我们能给他们提供的最大的支持便是给他们一个简单而无忧无虑的童年。

Try not to give pressure all the time to kids.  You are their father or mother, so, when the kids in pressured, you should know it.  Recently I learned a new trick.  I will let Jay practise his Chinese spelling or English spelling a few days earlier, and every day test him on a few words.  But one day before the spelling test, I will not test him at all.  He also felt strange.  But I told him, we learned is not to be tested.  We learned because it is important for us to remember what we learned.  This is such an important concepts the kids need to know.

So, one day before the test, I will let you (Jay) think if you are ready for the test or not.  If not ready, you will know what to do yourselves.  My job is to make sure you learned you know and you remembers what you learn, not to give you pressure.  So, for Chinese Spelling, usually we will have fun writing the words in the air by referring to funny way of remembering the words.  And he loves it.  And when we did this?  a day before the spelling day, we learn things that is not to be tested.  And I found it useful, and he most of the time, remembers what he learned.  

我们的孩子应该被书籍、自然、美工和探索包围。我们大多数的人可以尝试放弃90%的玩具，而孩子们并不会想念的。但有些东西是重要的：组装型的玩具像乐高和积木，创意型的玩具如各种手工艺术材料（很棒），乐器（真的和多元化的），扮演角色的服装和各种各样的书籍，是的书，还是书。

他们也应该自由地探索下面这些事情：当我们准备晚餐时，他们可以坐在儿童椅上玩豆子（当然，得有大人监督）；他可以用小铲子揉面包捣乱，在厨台上用刷子玩面团，即使弄得哪哪都是。在后院给他们留一块地方他们可以任意地挖草刨地。

Remember, I read an article saying not to scold your kids when they dirty the wall.  In fact, home is their home, and it should be warmed.  So, my home, I don’t care what other things, but I decorate it with their paintings.  Nice or not nice, all paintings goes up the wall.

One more thing kids need to learn and parents have to try our best to teach is to teach them to be independent.  Teach them to be responsible.  As a student, you are responsible with all your homework.

Yesterday, I sit down with my son Jay to go thru page 3-page 41 of his Math Pupil Book.  There is a quiz coming.  And I think my son learned a lot from yesterday review.  And after the review, I got a kiss on cheek from him, and he said “Thank You daddy for teaching me”.  Hmmm…. I think there are some mis-concept that he had, and he was not sure, and thru this review, he actually learned how to solve those.  And he thank me by simply a kiss on my cheek.  You feel so good after that.  And you feel so proud of it.  

This kid has really grown up… so fast that you may not even know about it.

我们的孩子更多需要的是我们。我们已经变得很善于说我们更需要照顾好我们自己，甚至把这当成一个借口，让其他人照顾我们的孩子。尽管我们都需要私人的空间，与朋友聚会，需要有效的休息，需要偶尔放下父母的身份。但我们的孩子更需要父亲坐下来用心倾听他们的生活，需要母亲跟他们一起做手工，需要我们给他们讲故事和跟他们一起犯傻。他们需要我们在春夜里陪他们散步，即使他们还只是蹒跚学步的幼儿。他们完全可以跟我们一起准备晚餐，即使这会使完成时间延长一倍。

The kids always make their parents their idol.  They need us.  So, no matter how, we must give them some of our time.  We must let them know that we always love them.  Money can earn later, but building the foundation of a kid can’t wait.  And you really have to strategise it.  Be with them when they grow up.  And that is your responsibility as a parent.

他们应该了解，他们永远是我们心里的第一位，而且我们真心爱和他们一起共度美好时光。

Every one are in control of their own times, it is a matter how to organise it.  So, cannot say you don’t have time.

It is not wrong to let your kids play so much.  Up until today, I still have friends say I let me kids play too much.  No need to study meh?

Well. we will manage it.  Together hand in hand with my son.  P1 and P2 should be playing time.  Should be honey moon period.

Studying for Math Test

Hey, I have to be careful using the word "Test" or "Exam" for Primary One students.  Ha Ha Ha Ha.

P1 & P2 not suppose to have "Test" or "Exam".  They have what they so called "Holistic Assessment".

Aiya, MOE is really… really…. "Holistic Assessment" has to be tested under a "Test" or "Exam" format.  So, it is still a "Test" or "Exam" la.

After we been thru Term 2 and Term 3, although they did not say when exactly, we know the "Test" is going to be on the first or second week.

There is nothing much I can do about Chinese and English.  So, my job is to make sure Jay Jay understand the concept of Multiplications and Divisions.

The other day, I shared how I train Mr. Jay to do Multiplication by self creating a Multiplication Table.

Let's put all these concepts into test.  My test.

It is just the same as what every parents would do, buy some extra assessment book for him to do.  Then correct it and teach him the taught process. 

So, let's start from the book from the left and one by one he finished the Multiplication and Divisions chapter in a few days.

 

Initially on the first book.  It is a assessment on how they think, and what they know from the class.

Seldom you get 100% right.  Given that this is the first time, parent steps in to teach him.

Like Question #9, I have to teach him that, always use the correct operations based on information given.  If there are two piece of info given, he has to put the information in the left side of the equation, Instead of putting it anywhere.

For Example, here you know you got total of 25 balloons, and he bought three packets of 8 balloons which total to 24.  So, He must know and learned how to put 25 and 24 on the left side and make use of "Subtraction" to find answer.

Instead, he simply any how write 24+1=25 instead of 25-24=1

(Ignore Question #10, I think the question itself is in question).  My son answer correctly, because she is short of 3 pencil, and how many does see need, which is 3.  What kind of questions is this?  

So, sometimes assessment book also got lousy questions or wrong question.  Must be careful and explain to them.

He really hates this kind of question.  Because it is like writing a English journal, he said.  He sure kalang kaput when answer this kind of question, and like daddy, his English need a lot of polishing.

Sometimes you get a few of challenging questions.  But it is fun, and that is how he learned, by having fun!

OK.  Now, we come to the main topic of this blog entry.

1.  When you see questions like this where it has space between questions, that means he has to do the working and find the answers.

2.  Although he is P1, but you know that MOE promotes Model drawings.  So, you can start teaching him Model.

3.  Let him visualise the problem by drawings, and then, at the side produce the working.

4.  If you do not know what is Model, I suggest you can go learn it in some talks, or tutorial session.  I actually paid to attend a parent tuition on Model drawings.  I learned a great deal.  Those questions previously I thought need to use Algebra to solve, can all be solved by simple Model drawings and visualising the Model.

5.  In primary schools, they are going to use a lot of Model drawings to solve their problems.

For example.  This questions here.

Andrew collected 9 stamps.

Danny collected "TWICE" as many stamps as Andrew.

How many stamps did they collected all together.

So, for Andrew, you draw a rectangular of 9.  Then, on the below of the first rectangular, you draw two equal size rectangular, as Danny collected twice.  Fill in the "9".

So, you know you need to solve 3 x 9 = 27.

The other questions is ...

Edward has 2 stamps at first.

So each week, he doubles his collection.

So, 1st week, you draw two rectangular of the same size.

2nd week, you draw the same rectangular of the same size than the week before.

In this case, you add up the 2+2=4, and fill in 4 in both rectangular.

And do the same for last week.  You fill in 8's in both rectangular.

So, you know to find total stamps he has for 3rd week, he has to do 2 x 8 = 16.

I love doing his math together with him.  

I never learned Model drawing before.  Before that, I solve everything using Algebra.

But now, since I have some prior knowledge of drawing the Models, I am using it to solve the question.

And I love it because it is also a challenge for me to see how to draw the CORRECT MODEL and the child can take a look and find out what is the answer quickly.

HaHaHaHaHa.

So, for teachers/adults, I drew 5 squares.  And I know each square is $3 each.

Immediately, under the teacher squares, I drew a rectangular which equal to 5x square.  That will be my 5 students.  So, I drew 3 big rectangular, which equal to 15 students.

Each rectangular, I marked 5x$2 to represent a group of 5 students.

So, for each group of 5 students, I SHADED one square in the teacher/adult square.  Because, every 5 children get a free adult ticket.  

So, you got 3 groups of 5, then, you SHADED 3 squares.

Fill in the dollar value $3.

And now, you can solve the total admission fee needed which is total to $36.  

Jay did this wrong.  But after he saw the Model drawing, he immediately understood.

Jay Jay is very lazy.  When he did the last book on Sunday.  He did not do any workings at all and straight away write the answers.

For both chapter in this suppose to be hardest book, he score all correct.

Well, after the training from his school homework, and the previous two books, he becomes better.

And he felt very proud of completing the last book with flying colours.  HaHaHaHaHa.

Another one.  I love this sort of question as this is the typical solving Math using Model drawing question.

So, for this question.  

Because Box A has 4 more than box B.

1.  So, you draw the rectangular of A which is longer than B.

2.  Both rectangular has to draw side by side vertically.

3.  Then, you EQUATE THE PARTS.  Mean, you draw a line so that the rectangular A has equal parts same as rectangular B.

4.  Fill in "4" in the smaller rectangular there.

5.  Next clues is Box B has 6 FEWER than Box C.  So, you know Box C going to be longer than Box A and B.

6.  So, you draw a longest box there.  Then, you EQUATE THE PARTS AGAIN.

7.  You can fill in 6 or further equate the parts as Box A, so that you can fill in 4 and 2 in separate equate parts.

8.  How many marbles in Box C?  

9.  So, you take 25 subtract those extra one, which is 25 - 4 - 6 = 15

10.  Then, you know the for P1, their division is merely draw all the 15 objects there and CIRCLE equally.

11.  So, the answer of the missing square for A, B and C (which is all equal) is "5".

12.  So, Box C has 5 + 6 = 11.

I love the Model drawings, as it really helps to constructs your math concept and your thought process in a very organised manner.

All the divisions you can simply draw the total objects and figure out how to circle the groups.

This is the last questions.  And it seems that he has read the questions very carefully and that is why he can score 100 in both Multiplications and Divisions in this book.

No wonder when we go Garden by the Bay yesterday, he wrote this on his wishing card.

He is such a confident kid.  Now, only his carelessness can stop him from getting full marks.  hahahahaha

Good luck my son.  You can do it.  Even you don't get full marks, I know you has learned well in both the multiplication and division concepts.  Your foundation has been fixed.

The Singapore Model Method for Learning Mathematics

Call me a Kia-su Parent, I don't care!  But what I care is, when your kid bring a simple math question (or is it an English question about math) to you and you are not able to solve it using the correct Singapore way.  What will you do?  Will it be too late to learn the correct math?

Welcome to the world of "Model Method" for learning Mathematics.  :)

From time to time, my ex-colleagues will pass me some math questions for their primary kids and hope that I, "the Engineer" can solve it.  Well, the truth is, when I see the question, it is very simple question.  But when you try to solve it, by nature, from what we learned 30 years ago… we used Algebra to solve it. In fact, most of the questions took me more than 10 minutes to solve.

Wait now, we are talking about primary school children, so, how on earth that they know about Algebra in Primary school?  

Well, Singapore's answer is the "Model Method".  A very powerful visual method to help solve complicated math question for Primary School students.

I know Jay Jay is only Primary 1 this year.  And they only learn about Model method in P3 onwards.  But you know me, I have strong interest to learn and explore "Model Method" and there I go...

The reason I went is because one of my friend went there, and she think it is good. 

Also, these are the people who write math books for schools here in Singapore.  Only sell it in school's book store I heard.  So, can't be wrong right?

I bought this book after the lesson so that I can practise 3 questions a week.  So, by the time Jay Jay reached P3, his daddy will be or should be able to solve any kind of math questions using the Model method. kekeke

OK.  Let's do one simple question so that we can have a quick peep on what is Model Method.

Question:  There were 320 more red marbles than blue marbles in a bag.  If 30 red marbles were removed and 80 blue marbles were added, there were thrice as many red marbles as blue marbles in the bag.  How many marbles were there in the bag???

To solve this question, one has to be GOOD in ENGLISH.

Also, one has to be able to brackets or highlights the different condition.

Once you have understand the question.  It is time to draw the model.  

So, there are 320 more red marbles than the blue one.  So, you draw two blocks, one for red and the other for blue.

Stacks both blocks together.  And then, the red one should have 320 more marbles.  So, you indicate "320" in the additional block for red.  At this stage, you don't know how many blue marbles, or whether it is more than 320 or lesser.  So the SIZE of block is not important.  So, don't worry about the proportion of the blocks.

Now, some thing has happened.  So, you drew the same model diagram below and call it "IF (this happen)".

So, what has happened?  IF 30 red one were removed…. So, you SHADE the small block and label it 30.  Whenever you SHADE the block, that means, you have remove that number of block from the red one.  In our example, 30 red one is removed.

Very important tip is to use pencil to draw the model.  Because from time to time, you will need to erase the block and redraw so that it is nicer and easy to understand.

Next, 80 blue marbles are added.  So, you draw a small incremental block beside the blue block.  In our case, label "80" on it.  This is to indicate that you added 80 blue marbles.

Next step.  "EQUAL PARTS".  So, if you add 80 down at the blue block.  You EXTEND a line in the red block.  Then, fill in "80".  This is call to EQUAL the PARTS.

Now, you now that the additional block beside the red original unlabelled block has a TOTAL of 320.  So, that makes the remaining parts to be 210.  i.e. 320 - 30 - 80 = 210.

Lastly, "There are thrice as many red marbles as blue marbles at the end.  So, the total red block represents 3 UNITS compare to 1 UNIT of blue block.  

So, the remaining 2 units is actually 210.  Can you see it?  The original 1u blue + 80 = 1 unit of blue.  So, the total red now becomes three times of this 1 unit of blue.  So, that makes 210 equal to 2 unit of blue.  So, solving the 2 unit of blue will tell you what is a single unit.

As you can see … the confusing part is the size of the block of 210 is almost equal to size of 80.  And the 1u size is greater than these 80 and 210 blocks.  So, that is why proportions are not important.  The key important concept is that you know how to visualise the model diagram and solve the puzzle.

Once you can see 2 units of blue equal 210.  You can easily solve the math question.

The truth is, when I first read the questions, I got stuck there for almost 2-3 minutes with my mind blank.  But after the trainer explain how you solve it, I am like understand a bit here and there.

Then, when I continue the next 15 questions in different categories, again, each question is like a new question to me.  So, it is not easy.  And I am glad that I went to course to learn this.

At least, it gives me an idea what I am facing in next two years.  And it also gives me the preparation I need to teach my Jay Jay the correct math.  So, it is important to teach them to think how to solve it using model diagram.  No longer you need to memorise formulas or solve complicated algebra.  By using some block diagrams, you are able to solve these math questions.

It is a big WOW for me, but I enjoyed every single questions and every single challenge.

This is another good book where the trainer heard it is good.  This is for P1.

Jay Jay Daily Routines

Date:  Jan 22, 2013

For working parents, I found it quite impossible to spent lots of time with your kid during the day time after they come back from school around 2:20pm.  So, the only way to train them is to have the habit of following to-do list.  

For example, on Monday, after he come back from School, he basically had nothing to do from 2:20pm to 6pm until we come back.  So, with the supervision from my domestic helper who is also a teacher in Philippines, Jay Jay will be doing all these task.  And after he has done the task, he can put a tick in the box.  So, when I come back from work, I will counter check with his work.  

I think it is quite effective.  This is the only way to train him to be responsible for his own free time.  And the important concept is to "finish the homework earlier".  And also asking him to learn the spelling on his own.  And when we come back, we get to give him the spelling practise.

So, today, he has done well.  When I come back to fetch him for tennis, he is half way reading the "Young Scientist" magazine.  

So, for us, the parent, we also start the habit of assigning work for the kid to do.  Until one fine day that Jay Jay has master the skill of SELF-LEARNING, then, we can relieve for a while.  :)

Making His First PE Journal

Date:  Jan 15, 2013

Last week, Jay came back, and described how he wanted to make his PE Journal.  

So, he found a blue paper, and ask my helper to cut to fit it to cover the exercise book.

Then, he asked me to print some photos of him playing sports.  

I asked him which photos he wants, he said, The football, the bicycle, the ski, the bowling, the prawn fishing, the flying kite, the Taykwondo, the swimming, the ping pong, the forest adventure, and so on and so on...

So, I said "Your wish is my command…" (using robot sound)

And I selected those photos for him to choose.  He selected some, and I print.

Then, using a very "high tech" glue, (the one in the top photo, the blue pen thing beside Jay's hand), one by one, we stick the photos onto the PE Journal.  

Then, he writes the title, the PE Journal, the name, the class, and so on.

There you go.  A PE journal.  He is going to record down what he do in the PE class, PAL class in this book.  And I know he is going to talk about those photos of his.  He is very talkative, you know.  HaHaHaHa

A happy kid who enjoy his new Primary school.  Boy we are so glad about this!

A Simple Meal at Recess

There first two things that you get out from Primary 1 is

1.  The habit of saving money.  (We will deal with the habit of spending at much later time).

2.  Eating habits.  (Kids still love the home cook meal).

Today, for the first time, Jay Jay going to bring his favourite soya sauce noodles 干捞面.  This is the container he will be using.

You got to make sure he knows how to open.

I don't think the school sell many fruits, so, this is a way to bring fruits for Jay.  The first compartment has fruits.

Let's check out the 2nd compartment.

2nd compartment is Jay's main dish.

You open it by turning anti-clockwise.

This is the noodle I love to eat.  With lots of home grown green onion leaves.

This container can keep warm for a while.  So, we are testing it.  If it is OK, the food still a little bit warm, then, we will make more things for Jay to bring to school.  And he will spent a little money to buy drinks and save the rest.  That is how he start to save money.

And wow, so far, he has saved up $33.10 as of Jan 15, 2013.  Good job.

And of course, we have this to keep his cookies for the short snack break.
