Kay & His First 20KM Bike Ride With No Gear

Before that day, the furthest we ever cycle is from home to West Coast Park and back.  13KM.  But on Christmas day, Kay Kay broke his record.

Updates (27/12/2015) - We brought Kay Kay to cycle again at Garden by the Bay, Marina Barrage to East Coast Park then back to MBS and opposite of MBS.  So, we did 25.39KM today (and I only started my RunKeeper after 1-2km later, forgot to turn it on).  So, I think he could have easily bike for 26-27km today.  hahaha

Here is a video clip of Kay riding his Islabike.  His islabike is only 6.6lbs (less than 3KG).

Takes 2.13 hour to complete the 20.36 km ride.  Yeah!

It’s just an almost straight line ride.

Oh ya.  I bought myself and my wife a present this year.  A pair of folding bikes.

It is a tern folding bike.  Surprisingly very easy mechanism to fold.

It is the lightest of the tern bikes.  9.66kg.  I didn’t get the other brand who has the lightest bike around 8.9kg.  Because it has the limitation of 90kg.  I am at the edge.  hahahaha.  And I don’t like those folding mechanism too.

Once it folded up, it looks like this.  Notice that the two wheels are on the ground and you can move them forward (not backward, as the pedal will move if you move backward)

So you can push the bike with two wheels on the ground forward.  Very cool.

So I took it for a ride the next day.  And it is definitely slower than my Trek hybrid.  Much much slower.  But hey, I only buy the bike for recreation, so no need to ride fast.  It is one of the fast folding bike already.  hahaha

I installed a Cateye bike computer.

And a nice looking iPhone holder.

I bought the bike from a near by bike shop, “My Bike Shop”.  There is one at MidView City and one at Faber Drive.  The one at Clementi is going to move to town area.

So, I fitted both adult bikes in the car boot, and put two much lighter children bike at the back.  I feel more secure this way rather to have two huge adult bikes at the back.

The combine weight of these two kids bike is not more than 11kg.  So, you can tight it tighter and when you drive on the road it is not as shaky.

How I miss those days I spent riding bike, roller blading at East Coast Park.  Now as the kids has reached primary school (both), we can bring them out more here.

It is a long ride, but the kids actually enjoys it.

Just outside the Safra Golf Club, there is this Tool Station.  Cool indeed.

It even has a pump.

Very happy kid today.

Kay & His New Bike (5.9KG 16" Wheel) - Islabikes

I bought Kay Kay’s first IslaBikes in 2013.  http://miniliew.blogspot.sg/2013/11/jay-his-new-bike-55kg-nia-unboxing.html

It was a CNOC 14, and it weight only 5.5KG.  At that time, Kay was about 14KG body weight.

IslaBikes provide the lightest weight for him to handle.  And in 30 minutes he is on two wheels.

Kay Kay has grown much taller now.  And his weight has passed 18KG.

The CNOC 14 no longer suitable for him to cycle.

So, I asked my friend in US to buy a new 16” Wheel, CNOC 16 for him.  

Although the box looks really big, but the actual packing weight is 7.9KG.

Thanks to Mommy to pick up the bike from our friend in US.  And bring it back to Singapore in her last business trip to US.

5.9KG is only 400g more heavier than CNOC 14. (14” Wheel)

Let’s unbox it.

So, inside the box, there is a frame with wheels.  Plus a box for the pedals.

There are simple instructions to put the pedals on.  Here you turn it anti-clockwise.  The other side is clockwise.

Here is the bike.

It is a much bigger bike.  Below one is CNOC 14, the old 14” wheel size bike.

It stand much taller than the old one.

I also compare it with Jay’s previous bike, Trek 16Jet.  This bike is about 2 - 3 times lighter than the 16Jet.  And it is about the same wheel size.

In 5 minutes, he got used to this higher bike.

Immediately in the afternoon, after we come back from Taekwondo, we are on the way to test drive the new bike.

So far so good.  Taking the opportunity to teach them and remind them again and again on the road cycling rules.

Then we cycle to the Canal there.

The reason why I bought this bike for him is because, I serious don’t think a 15-16KG boy can handle a 15-16KG bike.  That is 1:1 ratio.

So, a bike that is slightly under 6KG, is just perfect for a 18KG Kay Kay today.

He does not need to spent a lot of effort to pedal.  There is no gear on this bike, but it is light enough so that it can be pedal fast.

Jay's bicycle is like a mountain bike with gears and suspension.  It’s heavy.  But 45KG Jay sure can handle it.

Kay’s bicycle has no gear.  Just a bicycle.

We did a 10KM ride today effortlessly.

Cycling in Punggol

Happy Birthday Singapore!

Thanks to the National Day, today is one of those rare moment where the kids do not have any classes on.  So, it is a truly holiday for us.

Let’s go cycling today!

Where shall we go this time...

I searched the web, and I saw this map, and I have decided to go to Punggol Park.  Let’s cycling in Punggol today!

Let’s pack the two kids bike in the car.

And the adults bikes are sunbathing outside.  And I just realise that this is probably the first time that we brought along 4 bikes in our car.  We had never tried it before.  Well I am glad that we did it today.

2 adults, 2 kids, 4 bikes and a sunroof.  :)

Here we are at the Punggol Park.  We did not know the place well.  So, we end up cycle back to where we started.  HaHaHaHa

I must say, it is quite a scenic ride.  The feeling is good.

Along the way, we found some cotton.

Yeap!  Real cotton.  There is a cotton tree just after you cycle out of the Punggol Park and turn right riding beside the canal.

Tall people on the bike.  Please beware of this 1.9m max headroom warning.  It is really low.  

It is a long cycling path.  Oh… the river is called Sungei Serangoon.

Hey Jay… Today is National Day, where you are wearing “I love Taiping” T-shirt?

Here come Kay Kay.  Kay Kay’s bicycle is just a plain bicycle without any gears.  And his bicycle wheel size is much smaller.  Therefore, the one that put up a lot of efforts in riding the bike is him.  I am glad to see him completed this close to 21KM ride.

Kay Kay has to do more than any of us.  So, I am guessing, he must be the tired one of all.

There is even a bicycle stop for the cyclist to have a toilet break and refill water.

Have not reach half way point, already looks tired.  Poor kids.  Better don’t let him know that we can change gears.  Wahahaha

Cyclist!  Please dismount your bike and push.  Unless you are small kids.  There are a lot of inconsiderate cyclist really ride fast thru the bridge.

OK.  We have cycle about 5-6KM already.

So, I am assuming that you can see sunrise from this bridge.

This is the Sunshine Bridge.

OK.  come on boys, let’s take a picture.  Before we go and hunt for food.

We are finally here.  At the end of Punggol Promenade.  There is this place called Marina Country Club.

There are some restaurant in here.

Let’s secure the bike here.

Wow.  Amazing place.  People who do wake boarding come here to take the speed boat.  There is a SPA in the building.  A couple sea food restaurant.  And a couple prawn or milk fish fishing place.

Let’s go find Boaster Cafe.

The pizza is very very nice.

So, we came from the Punggol Waterway park.  So, now, we go back via the Punggol Promenade.  That is JB and Pasir Gudang on the other side.

Wait… found a stretch of sea food restaurant here.

It is called Punggol Settlement.

Riding back is scenic too.

Here comes Kay Kay.

It is Singapore National Day.  So, don’t forget to put a flag on your bike.

Look what we have found!  A Tiger Orchid.

You thought only can find it in Botanical Garden, right?

Nope, it is here.  It is planted between the jogger path and the cycling path.  It is between the red bridge/sunshine bridge and the cyclist toilet.

And we finally came back where we started.

Wow!  We covered so much.

Yeah!  We did 21KM today.  The kids are very happy about it.

I always know there is a Punggol cycling path.  But because of all the kids enrichment classes, we hardly got any chance to come here.

Today is a very precious day for us, as we can really get to do some outing together in Singapore.

And to my surprise, Punggol Park to Punggol Waterway Park and then the Promenade is such a nice scenic ride.  I really did not know that Singapore still got such a nice place to cycle.  It is much better than East Coast Park or West Coast Park.

So, we definitely will come back here again.
